Deborah Kalas Photography is always on the hunt for new and different locations for her clients, no location is too obscure…
Stepping out of the plane at 10,500 ft. was amazing… Free fall was total abandonment… Once the chute is open the ride is peaceful and quiet… Floating, drifting, circling left and then right, wanting to never come down…and then there you are, on the ground….anxious to do it again.

Reiter Revue, a well-known equestrian German magazine hired me to photograph the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida. The assignment was to give their readers the feeling of the equestrian events in Florida and how it differs from German Equestrian venues.
It was exciting to photograph the event through a greater perspective than when I focus on one particular rider in their events. It was much more like the Documentary photography I used to do for Life, People, and New York Magazine. Not only were there the hunter and jumper horses, but polo and dressage as well.
I hope you enjoy the photographs.

Kathryn Collins Stewart, whom friends and family knew affectionately as “Katy” died of hepatoblastoma, a rare form of liver cancer, on December 30, surrounded by family. She was 12.
I had the pleasure of working with Katy and her family several years before she became ill. The evening of their family portrait session was a blue sky sunshine kind of day. We met at Atlantic Beach in Amagansett. Katy was a little shy as we began the portrait session but it didn’t take long for her to open up, let that beautiful smile out and enjoy playing along the water’s edge. By the time we reached the upper dunes, she changed into a beautiful flowing white dress; the sky was almost beginning to turn pink. She floated like an angel along the pathway in the tall grass. I was struck by her radiate beauty inside and out.
I feel blessed to have known her and our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with her family.
If you’d like to make a contribution, the family requests that donations be made to the Max Cure Foundation, Inc., 21 Settler’s Lane, Westfield, New Jersey 07090 or via maxcure.org. Donors should indicate whether funds are to be used for a scholarship fund in Katy’s memory at Pierson High School or for pediatric cancer research in her honor at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The scholarship will be awarded to students who exemplify remarkable courage, kindness and empathy.

On a quiet little street, walking distance from East Hampton, tucked away sits Deborah Kalas Photography Studio. In a house dating back to the early 1900’s it was originally a Sears Kit house. Since that time, it has undergone many transformations incorporating a small family and a growing business.
Photography sessions take place all over the Hamptons and beyond. The studio is a meeting place for consultations, presentation and selection meetings, an occasional bathroom and refresher break for a family traveling from out of town, and even a model’s changing room.
At the studio we print all of the retouched work in house, each photograph is air dried and lacquered for long lasting protection. Custom frames, Storyboards, Desk Folios and Holiday cards are all created here as well.

Book a portrait session and have your own tour of Kalas Studios and all of the quality work it produces.

“Jumping for Joy”

I am very pleased to announce that client presentation snacks have taken a leap forward. Kristofer Kalas, my son, has been attending The French Culinary Institute in New York City, the top cooking school in the country. Half way through his education he is already creating delicious palette surprises. He has offered to add some of his creations over the summer to our client presentations.
Pictured here is a “ginger cookie”, recipe made-up with a filling of Roquefort cheese and Crème Fraiche. Seemingly an odd combination until you taste it. The cookie has a wonderful taste and just the right amount of chewiness. The filling is understated and makes a rare combination of flavors truly out of this world.
By summer, his repertoire will only continue to grow as well as the added pleasure to our client presentations. It’s worth booking a session just for the desserts.

I recently had a client ask me about modeling photographs for her young daughter, “Can I use a photograph made last year?”
It’s a very competitive market out there. First and foremost, Does your child have the personality to be successful in front of the camera? Is your child confident about who they are? Are they happy, out going, active, and inquisitive? Are they engaging and playful? Do they have a sparkle when they smile? Some children are so comfortable in their own skin, no matter where they are and what they are doing they are easy to photograph. They have lots of different expressions that bubble out without much prompting.
To answers “Mom’s” first question, you do need recent photographs that portray your child now, not a year ago. I usually like to make 4 or 5 different photographs to create a comp card. Clothing and location changes add interest. Full body, 3/4 and closeup views bring variety to the model card.
One young wanna be model told me that she wants to model because,” You get to play and people pay you for having fun.” I have to agree that loving what you do and getting paid for it is a great way to live life.

The Today Show
The Today Show
Deborah Kalas appeared on the Today Show, January 30th, 2009. She spoke of her business and successes. The Today Show personally thanked her for her appearance and encouraging words for people across America.

“Working with Deb could not have been easier and more comfortable. She brought the best of our family {which isn’t easy!} and it showed in the beautiful prints that followed. We could not have been happier with the quality of the photographs and had such a tough time choosing which prints to use. Everyone tells us that our Christmas card is the best they have ever seen.”
